Lessons Learned from Supporting ClientEarth’s Africa Strategy


ACE D&H Consultants recently supported ClientEarth to co-develop its Africa Strategy. The process was intentionally built from the ground up. National partners led the initial documentary reviews, political economy analyses, and community consultations. This ensured the strategy was shaped by lived realities, not assumptions.

ClientEarth then convened partners, with bilingual facilitation support- through online and in-person workshops to refine the Theory of Change, co-create the vision and mission, and define strategic priorities grounded in community insights and partner expertise.

A key lesson: leadership engagement changes everything.
ClientEarth’s CEO was actively involved throughout, ensuring alignment with the wider organisation and building trust and legitimacy with partners. When leadership is present, strategies gain traction. When absent, they rarely do.

This assignment also reinforced the importance of intentional inclusion, bilingual facilitation, country-level support, and creating space for all voices to shape the outcome.

Overall, the experience showed that strategy becomes meaningful when co-created with those closest to the issues.
For ACE D&H, it was a privilege to support a process where community priorities, partner knowledge, and organisational alignment truly met.
